April is OT Month!! What in the world is OT? Can an OT help me with caring for my Mom who can be a bit 'stubborn'?

Updated: Jun 22, 2024

OT's are kinda like a teacher, cheerleader, psychologist, nurse, engineer, detective and magician all rolled into one. In each stage of life our job description can differ- however, we are always looking for the outcome that the person and family desires. In the geriatric field we really are honed in to folks having the greatest Quality of Life (QOL).

So what is OT? Warning- gonna get a bit geeky here ;) We are trained in neuroscience (brain, nerves), physiology (anatomy), kinesiology (how we move), psychology, activity modification and in adaptive equipment. We can be very creative in coming up with solutions that may involve duct tape, zip ties and foam ;) Our training includes extensive exploration of the senses- Vision, Hearing and Proprioception (how things feel).

OTs in home care are detectives: We are looking at the person, environment and demands (what do they need to do). What are the barriers in the Home? What physical or psychological barriers exist that place a person at risk for declining and increasing the safety risks? And most importantly- What is important for THEM to be able to do? We often come up with a lot of 'should's' or 'safety rules' but if we do not include the person with the limitations in the plan we are fighting a loosing battle.

I hope to be able to go on a journey with you the caregiver in designing a team approach to providing a loving, safe and caring environment for your loved one.

So back to the question, 'How can you help with Me care for my Mom who can be a bit 'stubborn'? I can help tweak out the 'non negotiables' and assist in placing Mom in the drivers seat with her seatbelt on and the wind in her hair. I believe that folks in this season of life are very special in what they have to offer us. Caring for a parent or elder is not like parenting. Their personalities, experiences, preferences have been formed over a lifetime of love and loss. Appreciating this life experience together and balancing needs Often creates a positive collaboration. I hope I get the opportunity to meet you and your loved one along this journey.
